And if you want to adopt through foster care you need a foster care license because in the State of Illinois you need to be a foster parent to your child for 6 months before you can proceed with adoption.
At Let It Be Us one of the most important things we do is recruit foster and adoptive parents. Our upcoming Adoption and Foster Care Information Fair in Chicago will host a panel of adoption and foster care experts and will include 6 different agencies that offer free licensing in the Chicago area and throughout Illinois. You’ll also hear an inspiring story from a mother who adopted her child through foster care. .
For your information, we’ve put together a list of the 3 different types of Illinois foster care licenses:
Traditional Foster Care
Caring for and being parents for children birth to 21 who have come into foster care as a result of abuse, abandonment or neglect.
Specialized Foster Care
Caring for children who have more significant medical, emotional or behavioral needs that require more attention and time.. The foster parents must go through additional training to obtain the skills necessary to meet the needs of these children. Children in specialized foster care may have medically complex needs, asthma, epilepsy, attention deficit issues, depression or anxiety.
Respite Foster Care
Temporary care for children to relieve other foster parents during emergencies, vacation, or other circumstances for a few days or weeks.
Becoming a foster parent and/or adopting a child or children through foster care is a life-changing opportunity. To become involved you need to have the desire to champion a child or children. And this parenting opportunity does not discriminate against age, income, gender, marital status or sexual orientation.

Susan is the Founder and Executive Director of Let It Be Us. She is an adoptive mother and a tireless advocate for children awaiting adoption from foster care. She sits on the Statewide Foster Care Advisory Council, their Legislative Committee, and is the recipient of a congressional award for her commitment to children in foster care awaiting adoption through the Heart Gallery of Illinois.
