Let It Be Us held an adoptive and foster parent recruitment event on Saturday, November 11 in Joliet, Illinois. The audience focused their attention on a panel of 4 agencies, each presenting their programs and parenting opportunities. The panel was joined by keynote speaker and adoptive mother, Konnie Ford, who is in the process of adopting her 3rd child from foster care. The program was moderated by Bob Noonan, Let It Be Us board member and adoptive father. Noonan shared his personal journey through foster care and adoption and stressed that the large and energetic crowd “posed a lot of great questions that led to some incredible open dialogue about foster care and adoption through foster care.” Nadiya Ali, Let It Be Us board member and chair of the Finding Forever Families program commented, “The personal experiences that were shared helped ground the fostering process and reinforce the importance of the time investment.”
Cemeno’s Restaurant in Joliet, Illinois, opened their doors to the event as their owner, Sharon Cemeno, has been involved in foster parenting. “I’ll do whatever I can to help these children,” Cemeno commented.
Katie Friend, Adoption Recruiter for The Heart Gallery of Illinois, a photography and story exhibit of some of the waiting Illinois children, asked for a raise of hands of people who would be interested in adopting a child who is 10 years old and up. As a dozen hands were raised, she smiled and invited them to meet with her after the event. While there are younger children listed on the Heart Gallery of Illinois, the average age of a child in foster care is 8.
