The Let It Be Us “Educational Mentorship Program” serves older children within the foster care system who live in group homes. Our goals are to ensure these children meet high school graduation requirements and enter college or vocational school. Our program offers 4 training sessions, certification and follow-on workshops for additional training. This is an opportunity to make a significant difference in the life of a child. This next Educational Mentorship Training Program will train Educational Mentors to target a specific population: Young mothers in foster care living in a group home who are responsible for their babies.
JOB DESCRIPTION: We are recruiting 8 women volunteers to be Let It Be Us Educational Mentors, working with young girls who live in a group home, are in foster care, are in high school, and have babies. Your primary focus is to support your young person’s education while also teaching parenting skills and identifying and filling – with Let It Be Us support – other needs that exist. Mentor/Mentee assignments are made based on skills and interests. For example, if you are artistic we will pair you with a young person who is also artistic. Our Mentors inevitably discover impediments to education such as the need for glasses, special educational materials and IEP (individual education plan within a child’s school system) adjustments. Let It Be Us stands behind our Educational Mentors and provides the funding to meet these needs so these children have everything necessary to achieve their targeted level of educational success, ultimately increasing opportunities for employment.
REQUIREMENTS: Women with parenting experience and a desire to work with and form a committed relationship with an older child in foster care and her baby. The goal is to meet once a week, according to your schedules, at the group home. The time commitment is serious, as these girls have been let down throughout their lives, and this program provides them with a consistent and healthy relationship. You will need to pass a federal background check and drug test, which is provided at no cost to you.
LOCATION: A group home for children in foster care in Bartlett, Illinois. The group home is well run with a committed staff.
TRAINING: To take place at Barrington’s White House in Barrington, Illinois. April 26, 27 and May 3, 4 from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. The trainer is an experienced teacher/trainer with an extensive mentorship training background. You will receive a certificate for your accomplishment.
COMMITMENT: 4 training workshops that are two hours long and one ongoing monthly meeting. Meeting with your young person (and her baby) at least once per week for at least one year. Longer relationships are possible. Life-long relationships are possible.
NOTE: All Educational Mentors will be required to pass a federal background check, obtain a simple physical with tb test, and pass a drug test, provided at no cost to you.
