What is Let It Be Us?
Let It Be Us is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission of serving children in Illinois foster care and Illinois families interested in foster care and adoption. We work in a partnership with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), and all of the licensing agencies in Illinois, and we are funded by donations and grants.
Why is foster care important and how is it connected to adoption?
In Illinois we have a dire need for foster parents and adoptive parents. Let It Be Us recruits foster and adoptive parents and works with caseworkers by providing information about licensed homes so that less children spend nights on caseworker’s floors and in shelters. When possible, if children can eventually return home that’s important. However, in over 50% of the cases in Illinois children are in need of pre-adoptive and adoptive homes. In Illinois you need to be a foster parent to a child for 6 months before you and adopt him or her. Therefore, the very first step in becoming a foster parent OR adopting from foster care is to obtain a foster care license. We need families who foster and we need families who will adopt.
How many children are available for aodption in Illinois?
In Illinois there are approximately 18,000 children in foster care. These children are all ages, stages and ethnicities. There is a need of permanency for all of these children, and adoption is just one form of permanency.
Does it cost anything?
No! Adoption from foster care is without cost. Also, becoming a foster parent is without cost. And our event is without cost too.
