Pride Month and Foster Care: Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth in Illinois
June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, honor its history, and recognize the importance of creating spaces where every person feels safe, valued, and supported. It is also an opportunity to shine a light on the experiences of LGBTQ+ youth in foster care and the families who open their homes to them.
At Let It Be Us, we believe every child deserves a family where they feel loved, accepted, and empowered to be themselves. This Pride Month, we invite families and community members to learn more about the unique experiences of LGBTQ+ youth in foster care and how they can help create brighter futures for children across Illinois.
LGBTQ+ Youth are Overrepresented in Foster Care
Research shows that LGBTQ+ youth are significantly overrepresented in the foster care system. While LGBTQ+ youth make up a relatively small percentage of the overall youth population, studies estimate that nearly 30% of youth in foster care identify as LGBTQ+.
Many LGBTQ+ youth enter foster care after experiencing family conflict, rejection, instability, or other circumstances that make it unsafe for them to remain at home. Once in care, they may face additional challenges, including placement disruptions, housing instability, discrimination, and mental health concerns.
The good news is that supportive adults can make a profound difference. Research consistently shows that having even one affirming adult in a young person’s life can improve mental health outcomes, increase resilience, and help youth feel a stronger sense of belonging.
Illinois is Leading the Way
Illinois has long been recognized as a national leader in supporting LGBTQ+ youth in care. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was the first child welfare agency in the nation to develop a dedicated LGBTQ+ youth policy and continues to provide resources and training to help ensure youth are treated with dignity, respect, and affirmation.
While policies are important, children and teens still need something that policies alone cannot provide: caring families willing to support them through life’s challenges.
What Does it Mean to be an Affirming Foster or Adoptive Parent?
One of the biggest misconceptions about fostering LGBTQ+ youth is that families need specialized expertise before opening their homes. In reality, the most important qualities are compassion, willingness to learn, and a commitment to supporting a child unconditionally.
Affirming foster and adoptive parents:
- Listen without judgment.
- Respect a child’s identity and experiences.
- Create a safe and welcoming home environment.
- Advocate for youth when challenges arise.
- Help children feel seen, valued, and accepted.
Children thrive when they know they are loved for who they are. For LGBTQ+ youth who may have experienced rejection or misunderstanding, that sense of belonging can be life-changing.
