Let It Be Us has received public and private funding to increase the number of licensed foster and adoptive homes in Cook, Lake and McHenry Counties in Illinois and their work has begun. Community foundations and private foundations from all of the counties have stepped up to increase the number of licensed homes in their areas. According to CASA of McHenry County, 40% of children who come into foster care in McHenry County are placed outside of McHenry County due to the lack of licensed homes in McHenry County. And according to CASA of Lake County, 37% of children who come into foster care in Lake County are placed outside of Lake County due to the lack of licensed foster homes in Lake County.
“The fact that so many children are displaced as they come into foster care is unacceptable and it doesn’t need to be this way,” said Susan McConnell, Executive Director of Let It Be Us, a unique nonprofit that gives children coming into foster care access to more licensed foster homes. “When a child coming into foster care has to be moved far away, he or she loses access to grandparents, siblings, teachers, coaches, friends, and friend’s parents. It’s counter intuitive to move children far away from their homes. We are sure that no one in any of these counties wants this to happen. Regardless of whether a child returns home or is adopted into a new family, they should not lose their resources in terms of the people who love them.”
With the funds granted Let It Be Us is increasing the number of Information Recruitment Fairs that they hold throughout the areas and have increased the staffing of Foster and Adoptive Family Recruiters and Licensing Coaches. These are experienced foster care licensing specialists who work to coach families registered with Let It Be Us throughout the entire licensing process. “I love working with families and I can really help them,” said Foster and Adoptive Family Recruiter and Licensing Coach Michelle Prickett. Michelle not only has experience recruiting and licensing families in the Northern Region of Illinois, she and her husband have adopted four children through foster care. When combined, the Prickett’s four children through adoption from foster care with their four children through birth, they have a total of eight children.
Let It Be Us gives great thanks to the community and private foundations that have funded these efforts to increase the number of licensed foster homes in these counties. We thank the Community Foundation of McHenry County, the Barrington Area Community Foundation, and all anonymous foundations for supporting Let It Be Us, the parents we serve and, most importantly, the children we serve.
